Israel vows to escalate war with new plan to ‘conquer’ Gaza

On May 5, 2025, Israel's security cabinet unanimously approved an expanded military operation in Gaza, aiming to defeat Hamas and secure the release of hostages.

Dubbed "Operation Gideon's Chariots," the offensive seeks to capture and maintain control over significant portions of Gaza, with plans to displace large segments of the Palestinian population to the southern part of the enclave.

The operation includes Israel assuming control over humanitarian aid distribution, a move criticized by the UN and humanitarian organizations for potentially violating humanitarian principles.

The plan has sparked significant international backlash, with strong condemnations from the UN, UK, EU, and various humanitarian organizations, raising concerns over forced displacement and humanitarian crises.

Israel has mobilized tens of thousands of reserve troops and conducted airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen following missile attacks, indicating a broader regional escalation.

The operation is also seen as a strategy to pressure Hamas in ceasefire negotiations, with potential delays until after U.S. President Trump's upcoming visit to the region.
